Find the minimum requirements below to start the steps to become a police offer for most police services within Ontario, including education requirements, testing, interviews and more.
Minimum Requirements
1. Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
2. Be at least 18 years of age.
3. Be physically fit and mentally able to carry out the duties of a Police Constable.
4. Successfully completed at least four years of secondary school education or its equivalent.
While secondary school is the minimum educational requirement for most police services in Canada, attending postsecondary school has advantages when applying to become a police constable due to the highly competitive recruitment process.
Police offers that have completed postsecondary education are also more likely to receive promotions and increased responsibility more quickly than those who did not complete postsecondary education.

5. Be prepared to undergo a thorough interview, comprehensive background investigation, as well as medical and psychological tests.
The interview will assess your suitability for the role. You also must undergo a background check, including a credit check and reference checks.
6. Produce a current 鈥淐ertificate of Results鈥 awarded by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police through a licenced vendor.
7. Never have been convicted of a criminal offence for which a pardon has not been granted.
8. Have a valid G Class driver鈥檚 licence with no more than six (6) demerit points.
You must be permitted to drive an automobile in Ontario with full driving privileges.
9. Be qualified in Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillator).
10. Be of good moral character and habits.

Steps to Become a Police Officer
1. Meet the eligibility requirements.
You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, have no criminal record, and be at least 18 years old.
2. Obtain a high school diploma or equivalent.
A high school diploma or equivalent is the minimum educational requirement for most police services in Ontario.
3. Complete a police college program.
All new police officers in Ontario must complete a Police Foundations or Law and Security program at a recognized college, or have completed a 4-year degree in a related field.

4. Pass a physical fitness test.
You must pass a physical fitness test to demonstrate that you meet the physical requirements to be a police officer.
5. Pass a medical examination.
You must pass a medical examination to ensure that you are physically and mentally fit to perform the duties of a police officer.
6. Pass a written test.
You must pass a written test to demonstrate that you have the necessary knowledge and skills to be a police officer.
7. Complete an interview.
Most police services in Ontario conduct an interview to assess your suitability for the role.
8. Complete a background check.
You must undergo a background check, including a credit check and reference checks.
9. Complete a police training program.
Once you have been accepted, you will complete a police training program at a police training facility.
10. Be sworn in as a police officer.
Upon completion of the training program, you will be sworn in as a police officer and will begin working for a police service in Ontario.
